Austerity Aesthetics is an RCA distinction awarded manifesto for a non-additive way of thinking. It surveys different modes of the minimal, tracing them through philosophy, art and design. The most extreme mode of reduction – the void – is employed to propose a tactical model of working with space. Austerity Aesthetics are examined and defined through the key tactics of Absorption, Carving, and Pouring, whilst seeking refined immaterial qualities and the presence of space.
